Rhinoplasty is considered by many surgeons to be the most challenging plastic surgery procedure. Chiefly this is due to: complex anatomy, changes in the tissue over a lifetime, and the delicate balance between airway function and appearance. The most important factors in performing rhinoplasty are creating a natural, un-operated appearance, providing an improved nasal airway, and creating a nasal shape that is well balanced with the rest of the face.
Rhinoplasty must be a very individualized procedure. Many factors must be taken into account when planning a rhinoplasty operation. While many people assume that most nasal reshaping surgeries are performed simply to remove a hump on the bridge of the nose, in reality this is only a portion of the reason for the performance of nasal surgery. Other common reasons include to restore a drooping or weak nasal tip, to refine a broad or bulbous tip, to refine a wide nose, to straighten a crooked or deviated nose, to reconstruct a previously operated nose, or to restore strength the collapse nostril walls.
Rhinoplasty operations are performed primarily via the "open" approach, where direct visualization of the nasal structures is permitted. This requires a irregularly shaped, camouflaged incision on the narrow bridge of tissue between the nostrils known as the columella. This incision typically fades to nearly nothing over time.
The procedure usually requires a week of recovery. A splint is worn on the outside of the nose, and swelling and bruising do occur. Every effort is made by the surgeon and team to make recovery as easy and rapid as possible. Nasal packing, often referred to as the most uncomfortable part of the procedure elsewhere, is avoided. Delicate, atraumatic technique, with an attention to detail is utilized.
